Piper Hill High School, Manchester
Synergy recently provided a day of workshops for Piper Hill School in Manchester for a Health and Wellbeing project. The goal was to provide enrichment for students and the project aimed at improving their students' health and wellbeing through the arts. Synergy provided one workshop for independent students and one for structured students. The workshops were dance/drama workshops exploring identifying feelings and emotions and how to express them. Synergy ran an entire day of workshops for different groups and the day was very fulfilling for the students.

Dancing Diversity: Embracing Differences Through Movement

Primary: SEND Dance & Movement

SEND Dance and Movement classes for Primary aged pupils (years 3 – 6) are designed to support young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities.

Our inspiring teachers will help children to keep fit and learn at their own pace. Our instructors will use Makaton symbols and PECS cards to aid communication where necessary, ensuring that every child can fully participate and enjoy the class.

Differentiated movement options will also be given throughout, including seated options, upper body only movements and lower body only movements. As well as developing dance skills, these classes explore the learning of other skills including teamwork, creative thinking, expression and choreography and empathy for others.

Our instructors also use props such as scarves, ribbons and parachutes and explore fun and different ways of moving our bodies. Our classes give children access to a variety of dance styles and often explore themes such as Space, The Weather, The Environment, The Jungle, At the Seaside, Fun Fair, Carnival and The Seasons. Our aim is to help reduce stress and anxiety, improve confidence, independence and overall mental health and wellbeing, boost the immune system, boost well-being, improve body and spatial awareness, balance, fitness, core strength, flexibility, motor skills, improved posture and improved resilience and confidence to try other activities.

Dance enables production of mood boosting endorphins and can help address emotional and psychological challenges and help reduce stress, build confidence, emotional regulation and resilience. Benefits will also include new friendships and networks, the chance to exercise as a family, improved confidence, well-being, increased independence and quality of life.

These classes are suitable for, but not limited to, children with special needs such as learning difficulties & Autism, ADHD, ASD, Global Development Delay, MLD, ODD, Down Syndrome, Dyspraxia, Asthma and hearing loss.

Secondary: SEND Dance & Movement

SEND Dance and Movement classes for secondary school pupils aged 11-18 are specifically designed to support young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities.

Our inspiring teachers will help students stay fit and learn at their own pace. Instructors use Makaton symbols and PECS cards to aid communication, ensuring that every student can fully participate and enjoy the class.

Differentiated movement options are provided throughout, including seated options, upper body-only movements, and lower body-only movements. Along with developing dance skills, these classes foster the learning of other essential skills such as teamwork, creative thinking, expression, choreography, and empathy for others.

Our instructors also incorporate props such as scarves, ribbons, and parachutes, exploring fun and unique ways of moving. Optional: Classes expose students to a variety of dance styles, such as street dance, hip-hop, commercial, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, and can also be themed around international dance styles such as, Rain, Salsa, African Gumboot, Haka NZ, Hawaiian Hula, Bollywood & American Contemporary.

Our aim is to help reduce stress and anxiety, improve confidence, independence, overall mental health and well-being, boost the immune system, and enhance body and spatial awareness, balance, fitness, core strength, flexibility, motor skills, posture, and resilience. SEND Teen Dance Fitness - SEND Dance Fitness for Secondary schools’ years 7-11 & Sixth Form

Our SEND Teen Dance Fitness classes (aimed at Secondary school children in years 7 -13) offer an energetic fusion of dance styles, sampling Street, Hip Hop, Disco and Contemporary and emphasises aerobic fitness.

Classes feature group and partner formations, dance techniques, stretches, and improvisation. It’s a fantastic way to stay fit, have fun, and learn new dance skills and styles.

Participants have opportunities to perform in dance showcases, assemblies, and end-of-term shows. These classes are suitable for complete beginners as well as improvers and intermediates.

Schools can also choose from a variety of styles such as Street, Hip-Hop, Cheerleading, Ballet, Contemporary, and Zumba. Teen Dance Fitness incorporates resistance training, stretching, flexibility, toning, strength, and cardio work, all set to fun, upbeat music with warm-ups and cool-downs.

Teens can build their fitness and muscular strength through activities that, where appropriate, might include skipping ropes, and partner work. This body conditioning class is excellent preparation for adult fitness classes. Participants will get fit while dancing to fun music, experiencing an energetic mix of dance styles and fitness moves.

Our dance classes are specially designed to support children with Down Syndrome. In a fun and relaxed setting, our inspiring teachers will guide students through engaging dance routines and movement exploration, whilst fostering peer-to-peer support.

These classes are suitable for both verbal and non-verbal students and are suitable for both primary and secondary pupils.

ParaStars Dance for Primary and Secondary schools

ParaStars Dance™ offers seated dance and movement classes specifically designed for children and young people with disabilities or long-term health conditions.

These classes feature upbeat music and fun dance moves that are perfect for increasing fitness, confidence, creativity and overall well-being. Participants will engage in enjoyable routines that enhance flexibility and muscle strength, while also benefiting from a fun and relaxing environment that helps manage stress.

The focus on posture and breathing techniques promotes stress reduction, and the regular, enjoyable exercise supports better health, improved toning and fitness and increased stamina, which all help to boost the immune system. Our classes are lively and engaging, and we often introduce fun themes such as Space, Travel, and Weather, suitable for the age of the participants. For some signposted classes, we include special features like disco lights to create an exciting atmosphere.

When working in schools and centres, we can offer classes themed around topics covered in the curriculum to promote learning and understanding of particular subjects. SEND Fitness for Secondary schools’ years 7-11 & Sixth Form

Our inclusive fitness class is designed for children in Secondary School (years 7-13) with Special Educational Needs.

Our experienced instructors will use Makaton symbols and PECS cards to aid communication where necessary, ensuring that every child can fully participate and enjoy the class.

Differentiated movement options will also be given throughout, including seated options, upper body only exercises and lower body only exercises. The sessions are tailored to build strength, improve posture, fitness, physical and motor skills, spatial awareness, balance, coordination and flexibility, and boost confidence in a supportive environment.

Our goal is to help children to develop their range of movement, improve their overall fitness and as a result enrich their everyday lives. Activities include fun exercises (cardio, stretching, toning), games and routines that cater to all abilities. Come and experience a class where everyone can thrive, stay active and have fun!

This course is ideal for participants who have wide ranging disabilities and additional needs which include:

SEND Dance & Movement - Sit & Be Fit for Primary and Secondary Level

Take a break from the busy world of school, friends, and socialising with our Synergy Dance and movement seated class. This seated class is an excellent way to relieve stress, recharge, and learn new skills while having fun.

Both lower and upper body options will be given, and our instructors will support children with varying abilities through offering differentiated options throughout each class.

Our instructors also endeavour to support children with a range of SEND, using PECS cards Makaton symbols to aid communication if necessary. Children will build core stability, improve resistance and toning, and enhance their posture and overall well-being. Join us for a relaxing and beneficial experience!

SEND Cheerleading for Primary & Secondary schools

Experience the excitement of our action-packed inclusive cheerleading classes!

Learn cheer moves, formations, routines and combinations, with optional stunts and lifts tailored to your ability. No prior experience is necessary, and we provide all the pom-poms.

Just wear comfortable trainers for support. Our expert instructor will develop the children’s cheer skills as well as supporting them to build confidence. Games and activities will be included, making these classes fun and engaging for all. Our instructors endeavour to support children with a range of SEND, using PECS cards Makaton symbols to aid communication if necessary.

Primary: Inclusive Dance for Visually Impaired & Blind Students

Each class is made up of a warm-up, dance routine and movement exploration and a cool down.

Our goal is for all children to have fun, exercising, dancing and becoming more connected with their bodies. The lessons have been developed for primary aged children and are signposted with verbal guidance and clear descriptions of dance moves.

Clear instructions and speech are provided to facilitate participation and promote the development of fitness. Introductions help to inform participants of what is coming next in the absence of visual cues and dance skills, movements and exercises are fully explained.

Participants also receive advice on their surroundings. This approach encourages participants to actively explore dance.

The classes promote sharing the dance experience with others, including family members or carers who are welcome to join. The instructors are experts in their field and also teach through Synergy in partnership with British Blind Sport. There are options for both low-impact and high-impact participation of the dance routines.

Secondary: Inclusive Dance for Visually Impaired & Blind Students

Want to keep moving in the holidays? Want to dance anytime anywhere? This course contains three creative workshops to support children with Special Needs or Disabilities.
